"Beauty attracts the eye but personality captures the heart". This is a well-known line which expresses the standard of beauty and personality. Yet many argue that beauty should be given the highest priority. This is why beauty contests have been running for decades. Some say beauty contests boost self-esteem and elevate socializing skills. Whereas many say that this is not the platform where women can express themselves at their utmost. So do the cons outweigh the pros?
From the 2010s, many articles and reports were published to show the positive side of beauty contests. In 2015, a blog was published by Weebly stating the positive effects of Beauty Pageants. There were several examples mentioned in the blog like: it encourages growth in confidence, outgoing personality and creates a strong self-image. Due to articles like these, many changed their views on beauty pageants. A lot also claimed that this was better than giving public talks or speeches.
Furthermore, several reality shows expressed their desire for beauty contests. Since beauty pageant competitions were aired on television, a lot of people now compared to the past understood the need for it. One of the main reasons for women participating in these kinds of events were to prove themselves that they can stand out from the rest. Indeed, this was proven to be true as many unprivileged girls won tons of competitions like these. This got them recognition not only across their community but throughout their nation.
On the other hand, even though these kinds of events gained a lot of recognition, they also left many questions for newcomers. Since beauty contests were taking place nationally and globally, a major drawback was favouritism. This even applied to competitions taking place in smaller cities. Favouritism was very likely as this was a competition which had many unique faces. Several reviews taken from viewers of beauty contests stated that this was ‘unfair’. The probability of this term is very possible even today because preference is always given to people who come from an established background. This was a major disadvantage observed.
To add on, many mothers have expressed their concern for sending their daughters in these kinds of contests. In 2016, there was an article published in childdevelopmentinfo.com which had 4 reasons why to keep your daughters out of beauty pageants. The author is a proud mother of 2 grown children and she has good teaching experience for 13+ years. The article listed 4 main downsides which included catty competition, exorbitant expenses etc.
In comparison, many claim the contests to be pointless whereas many said that this was a good opportunity for youngsters. Taking in account both points of views, beauty contests had several pros as well as many cons. Self-confidence and self-esteem were said to rise through this but also there was a chance of inferiority being developed. Many participants who hadn't won could develop a sense of loneliness and insecurity. This was a negative factor seen from the participants point of view. Similarly, many claim this to be a waste of time but however looking from a different angle, socializing was something which could be enhanced. Many ladies had a chance to interact with different people and get to know them better. This would surely uplift their ability to converse.
To conclude, after research I had found out that despite beauty contests being top-class and highly witnessed, the chances of making it were less. I think that women don’t necessarily have to deliver themselves on these platforms but rather they can choose more sustainable ones like debates and talks. Every woman has the right to voice out and I believe this could be done through areas where issues like favouritism are less likely.
